Understanding and Tackling Colorectal Cancer in Young Adults

Colorectal cancer is on the rise among adults under 50 globally, becoming the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Our latest review dives deep into the factors contributing to early-onset colorectal cancer (eoCRC) and explores crucial pathways in its development (Constantinou and Constantinou 2023).

Join us in raising awareness and empowering young adults with knowledge for early detection and prevention. Read the full review for a comprehensive understanding.

5-Point Action Plan for General Public:

    1. Know the Signs and Symptoms: Educate yourself and others about the signs and symptoms of colorectal cancer, especially in young adults. Increased awareness can lead to early detection. Common symptoms include haematochezia (blood in stools) and abdominal pain, with a focus on the left-side colon.
    2. Embrace a Healthy Lifestyle: Adopt a healthy lifestyle to reduce modifiable risk factors associated with colorectal cancer. Focus on maintaining a healthy weight, staying physically active, managing type II diabetes, and minimizing the use of antibiotics. Small lifestyle changes can make a significant impact.
    3. Understand Genetic Predisposition: Be aware of your family’s medical history and understand the role of genetic predisposition in colorectal cancer. If there is a family history, consider genetic counseling and regular screenings to detect any potential risks at an early stage.
    4. Advocate for Early Screening: Advocate for early screening programs targeting younger populations. Encourage conversations with healthcare providers about the importance of screening, even for individuals under 50. Early detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes.
    5. Support Research and Awareness Initiatives: Stay informed about ongoing research on colorectal cancer in young adults. Support and participate in awareness initiatives, fundraising events, and campaigns aimed at preventing and treating colorectal cancer.

Together, we can make a difference!
