World Suicide Prevention Day: Kindness, Connection, and Support
On 10 September, World Suicide Prevention Day highlights the theme “Changing the Narrative on Suicide.” According to WHO, more than 720,000 people die by suicide each year worldwide, and many deaths are preventable with compassionate connection and timely care. Every life matters!
Evidence from the literature supports that:
✓ Stronger social support is associated with lower risk of suicidal thoughts, plans, attempts, and death.
✓ Small, regular acts of kindness reduce loneliness and strengthen community connection.
How you can help:
- Check in with someone and listen with care and without judgement.
• Offer practical help, for example arranging an appointment with a healthcare professional.
• Share trusted resources and encourage professional support.
• Use respectful, non-stigmatizing language.
• If there is immediate danger, contact your local emergency number.
If you need help:
Reaching out is a strong step toward safety and recovery. Contact your local emergency number or talk to a trusted or a family member or a friend. Please remember that you are not alone!
